The Twickenham MP has questioned whether women and ethnic minority residents can trust the Metropolitan police.

Munira Wilson was speaking in the House of Commons in response to the report from Baroness Louise Casey, who found London's police service guilty of being institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic.

The Casey report said cultures of 'blindness, arrogance and prejudice' are prevalent in the Metropolitan Police.

And she warned: "The Met can now no longer presume that it has the permission of the people of London to police them. The loss of this crucial principle of policing by consent would be catastrophic. We must make sure it is not irreversible."

She added: "It is rot when you treat Londoners in a racist and unacceptable fashion. That is rotten."

In the House of Commons, the Twickenham MP questioned party political point scoring by the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, who suggested the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, who is jointly responsible with the government for the Met, was largely to blame for failing to remedy long-standing failures.

Ms Wilson said: "Whilst there are many dedicated and decent police officers who serve our capital with integrity and professionalism, Londoners confidence in the Met Police will be utterly shattered by the horrors and systemic failures revealed in Baroness Casey's report.

"And I dare say the party political point scoring that we are hearing, particularly from the despatch box, will not help."

She asked: "So, the next time I am visiting in a school or college in my constituency, does the Home Secretary really think I can look a young woman or person of colour in the eye and tell to pick up the phone to the police when they are in danger, or indeed consider a career in the Met police?"

The Home Secretary answered , saying: "The report is scathing in tracking and reporting on incidents of misogyny and how confidence has been broken amongst women and girls. That is why it is vital we work with women and girls to restore that confidence.

"More must be done, we are on the right track.'
