Bomb alert – builders discover what may be World War II explosive

Police and the London Fire Brigade were called to an address in The Hermitage, Richmond, and residents and others were cleared for a time to allow an investigation.

A number of roads in the area, including some around the bus station, were sealed off.

Richmond Police said: "Police were called to an address in Richmond to reports of possible aircraft ordinance in the rear garden.

"London Fire Brigade are also in attendance alongside specialist units whilst this is being investigated. Residents have been informed and cleared from the area while the item is checked."

A number of roads in the area, including some around the bus station, were sealed off.

The incident was resolved by lunchtime. The police added: "This has now been dealt with by specialist officers. (apparently it was from WW2 and anti aircraft ordinance. No danger whatsoever to the public."

The London Fire Brigade said: "Firefighters assisted emergency service partners at an incident on The Hermitage in Richmond today (April 2).

"The Brigade was called at 1024 and the incident was over for firefighters by 11.23. Two fire engines from Kingston Fire Station attended the scene."
