A plan to reinvent a recreation ground in Barnes has been backed by more than 60 people with pledges of nearly £6,000.

Friends of Barnes Common is in the third year of its project to upgrade the Vine Road Recreation Ground.

The group says the rec is within a catchment area that includes several areas of deprivation and a higher than average number of children and young people.

It is bidding to win funding from the Mayor of London's resilience fund and the Friends' development officer Jackie Marie encouraged people to donate or leave supportive comments to boost their chances.

"We really need our community to spread the word, tell the Mayor in the comments section of the crowdfunding page what this project means to them, how crucial local parks are to the whole community, and of course make a pledge if they can," she said. "A pledge can be as small as £2 and every single pledge counts!"

"We have made a fantastic start, with 20% of our target pledged by over 60 backers. We still have a way to go to make this a reality for our community," Jackie added.

"With this funding we hope to test some elements of the Master Plan this summer, including a temporary pump track for skate boarders, scooters and roller-bladers to enjoy.

"We are keen for your support in designing and implementing this, so if you are looking for a place to show off your skills, join our campaign and show the Mayor this is what you want.

"For younger families, we hope to make some small improvements to the park, such as some early years play equipment and outdoor seating near the pop up café, you will be able to enjoy your coffee or tea while your children play safely within sight. We would also like to add some additional planters to grow our popular community growing project and we would like to build a temporary outdoor classroom for use by the whole community.

"The Mayor of London's team are now assessing our campaign along with another 70 proposals, to help him decide which projects he would like to pledge to on March 15. Let's work together, please help us show him we have your support!

"If you would like to know more about the work of Friends of Barnes Common and how you can get involved, why not become a Friend of Barnes Common – it's fun and it's free!"
