A blaze consuming around 100 tonnes of waste at a recycling centre last night in Richmond is now under control but the centre has been closed until further notice.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the fire at the Re-use and Recycling Centre next to the Thames Path on Townmead Road at 8.43pm on Sunday, June 20.

The fire was under control by 11.24pm thanks to fire crews from Richmond, Heston, Chiswick, Hammersmith, Wandsworth and other surrounding fire stations.

Due to damage done by the fire, Richmond Council has confirmed that the site will be closed until further notice.

It said anyone with a booking will be contacted about rescheduling.

Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night to dampen down the area.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Residents in the area are advised to continue to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke.

The London Fire Brigade is now investigating the cause of the fire.
