Bluebird Care Richmond & Twickenham director opens up about ADHD diagnosis during Neurodiversity Celebration Week

Mel Fairchild, Operations Director at Bluebird Care, has shared her journey of being diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) in a bid to raise awareness and promote acceptance during Neurodiversity Celebration Week (17 March - 23 March).

Mel was officially diagnosed in September 2023 after years of questioning her behaviours. For her, receiving the diagnosis was a relief.

"I started noticing behaviours that might come across as rude, and that really upset me because I would never want to be rude to anyone," she said.

"Getting my diagnosis helped me understand that my brain just works differently, and that's okay."

Known for her calmness in a crisis, Mel says she thrives in high-pressure situations but can find smaller disruptions more stressful. Still, she's never seen her diagnosis as a limitation.

"It's made me determined to succeed, to lead, and to be open and honest with people. I see things from a different perspective, and that helps me handle stress in my own way."

Mel admits that in past jobs, opening up about her diagnosis didn't always feel safe—and at times, left her feeling judged or misunderstood.

At home, ADHD has presented its challenges too, but with a supportive partner by her side, she has found stability.

Now at Bluebird Care, Mel says she has finally found a place where she feels fully accepted.

She added: "I'm so lucky to have amazing managers and a great team. They don't see me as different or quirky—they just see me as me.

"They embrace my 'fairy dust' ways, and I honestly couldn't work for a better company."

Her advice for Neurodiversity Celebration Week is simple: "Embrace it! Be yourself. The right people will support you and create a safe space where you can truly thrive."
