The focus on health and fitness has grown significantly in recent times with more than 7,000 gyms nationwide, meaning people are spoilt for choice on where to begin with their fitness journeys. 

Twickenham gym, The Shredquarters, stands out by not only offering members a top-of-the-line gym facility, but provide award winning HIIT and strength classes, each led by two experienced personal trainers, from 6am to 8:30pm.  

Headed by mother and son duo, Sandra and Tom, The Shredquarters' classes combine high energy, full body HIIT training to get you to work hard, stay motivated and get fitter. 

In contrast, the slower paced LIFT classes focus on building strength and your ability to move better. 

After putting me through one of the 'Shred' classes, Sandra explains they have something for everyone regardless of ability, age or gender. 

She tells Nub News: "We offer either memberships - two classes a week, three classes a week, or unlimited classes or packs of classes for more flexibility." 

She adds: "We also offer classes for children between 10 to 15 years of age.

"For the kids' classes, we try to focus on fun, as well as teaching them the correct form and technique in a safe environment. Importantly, these are led by experienced personal trainers. 

"We offer kids' classes three afternoons each week, and they are becoming very popular.

"Our LIFT classes focus on building strength. These a slower paced and concentrate on form and technique. 

"They are great for people who do not know what to do when they are in a gym, but, also cater for people who want to progress. 

"We get lots of people joining these classes, following advice from doctors or physios about the need to build strength. 

"It is well known that strength training, not only helps prevent osteoporosis, but keeps us mobile as we age."

Sandra continues: "And for those that want to be challenged, we run classes called Competition Club. 

"For people who take their fitness seriously and like to take part in events such as Hyrox, Turf Games or Battle Cancer, we run classes to prepare members for these events. 

"And of course, we put teams of members together to compete in these events too." 

Having opened in 2022, Sandra and Tom now enjoy 200 members and 12 staff, with room for more looking to find their next exercise home. 

"What really sets us apart is the member community that we have built, says Sandra.  

"The photo below is from our Christmas party at the Crane Tap, but we also have regular dinners, fun competition days, quiz nights and this coming October we are taking the gym on tour to the Algarve for a fitness retreat."

When it comes to the working dynamic between the mother and son duo, Sandra explains "it is like divide and conquer". 

"We both want the same thing. We both love the community and our members have become very special to us. 

"They are what makes every day so fulfilling. We know the name of every single member and pride ourselves on making everyone feel welcome from their very first day."

While Tom concentrates on designing and leading the classes, as well as personal training, Sandra concentrates on the business management and marketing, in addition to running nutrition programmes for members and planning the social calendar.

Sandra continues: "I do all the marketing for management, bookkeeping, signing up with new members, organising everything, the socials, etc."
