Nub News sponsors Greenacre Financial are supporting efforts to help fund treatment for three-year-old Rio Spurr, who has been diagnosed with stage four cancer.

Rio's parents have been told the youngster had a large tumour on his right kidney that has spread to his lungs.

It was subsequently established that he has a rare type of kidney cancer known as Wilms tumour, which is only diagnosed in 80 children each year in the UK.

The situation has been extremely difficult for Rio's parents, former Blackburn footballer, Tommy Spurr, who was forced into retirement by injury, and his self-employed mum, Chloe.

Since April, Rio has been receiving chemotherapy treatment at Manchester Children's Hospital and underwent a four hour surgery to remove the main tumour as well as his right kidney.

Rio, from Ribble Valley, will have to undergo at least another nine months of treatment, with more intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy for his lungs.

Chloe said: "After the latest conversation with our consultant, and initially being reluctant to do any fundraising, we have decided that this is only the beginning. If Rio relapses and we run out of treatment options in this country we want to be able to give him the best possible fighting chance of survival."

A GoFundMe page and a number of fundraising events are being run around the country by youngsters and others with a target of raising £100,000. The current running total has hit £35,400.

Chloe said: "The money raised so far is nothing short of gob smacking. Tom and I are so touched by everyone's generosity - totally and utterly blown away. Family, friends and strangers have shown us so much kindness. We really do appreciate it a lot."

Greenacre will be donating £10 for every piece of business they do during the month of August and the children of some of the staff are taking part in their own fundraising efforts.

These include Savannah Stanworth, aged three, who will be swimming every day for a week to raise funds, and Lily Gault who is hoping to £500 by cutting off 10inches of her beautiful golden locks. Her hair will be donated to a charity that makes wigs for other poorly boys and girls.
