Richmond has a new police leader.

Chief Superintendent Lis Chapple has taken the reins as commander of the Met Police's South West borough command unit.

She has succeeded Chief Superintendent Sally Benatar who is retiring today (Friday, August 28) after 31 years in the force.

Richmond Police posted about the change at the top of their policing structure and a first message from Ms Chapple in the job.

Today, Chief Superintendent Lis Chapple takes over from Sally Benatar as BCU Commander for South West London. She will be leading our policing teams who cover the boroughs of Richmond, Kingston, Merton and Wandsworth.

Chief Superintendent Lis Chapple said: "I am excited to be returning to the area where I began my policing career. I worked as a special constable in Richmond and Kingston and had my first posting as a full-time officer in Wandsworth.

"I have been working very closely with Sally since the end of July to prepare for my new posting as BCU Commander and I am looking forward to continuing her legacy.

"We will continue to focus on improving links between the community and police, reducing violence and anti-social behaviour, responding quickly to calls and protecting the vulnerable.

"Ahead of the bank holiday weekend, I would like to reassure you that we have additional policing resources in place. Our officers will be available to respond, as needed, to any unlicensed music events and any pockets of anti-social behaviour. I hope you have a safe and happy weekend."
