A Richmond Councillor has stepped down from his role, but there will not be a by-election until next year because of the new coronavirus law.

Cllr Dylan Bexendale, a member of the Green Party, has resigned as a councillor for Hampton Wick ward for "personal reasons."

In line with the coronavirus law, any election is suspended until May 2021.

Mr Baxendale was first elected to the council in 2018.

He sat on the environment, sustainability, culture and sports committee.

Cllr Gareth Roberts, leader of the council, said it had been a "pleasure to work with" Mr Baxendale.

"I've found him a pleasant and thoughtful colleague and I'll miss his contributions. On behalf of the council I'd like to thank him for his service to the borough and wish him well in his future endeavours," he said.

Cllr Richard Bennett, leader of the Green Party group on Richmond Council, added: "I know that this was a difficult decision for Dylan, but right now there is a strong need to focus on his work and family.

"He will continue to be a valued member of the Greens, and a larger than life character."

Mr Baxendale said it had been "an honour" to represent Hampton Wick ward.

He said: "I would like to especially thank my fellow ward councillors, Brown and Millard for their support and the excellent work they are doing for their community. I would like to thank all the council and members and wish them all the best of luck for the future, especially my fellow Green Party councillors"

A vacancy notice will be published, and a by-election will be held if requested by two electors.

However, according to the Coronavirus Act 2020 a by-election will not be held until Thursday May 6, 2021.

This date may be brought forward or deferred by the government depending on the circumstances.
