A family-run ferry service across the river from Marble Hill to Ham is winding down for the season.

Hammertons Ferry will be closed in November after a few months like no other.

As a thank you to its customers and supporters, they will take people over the Thames for free on their final day of the season, on Halloween next Saturday.

"Times are hard, life has changed, our spirits were low but without you we would be no more," they wrote.

"On behalf of all of us at Hammertons we would like to thank you for all your love and support during this tricky season.

"So next Spooky Saturday (October 31) we would like to treat you to a day of ferry trips to Ham and back, on us, to end the season."

Hammertons is run by father and son Francis and Andrew Spencer and is a popular community resource.

It is based on a jetty off the river towpath and near the playground in Marble Hill Park.

The only other local ways of crossing the river are over Richmond Bridge and at Teddington Lock and Hammertons' location in between the two make it very useful for anyone wishing to get over to Ham, and back.

Hammertons will be back in December-February on weekends, before the 2021 season starts in March.
