Drivers with an electric vehicle will be able to charge their car for free this Wednesday (September 9) on World EV day.

World EV day is a global celebration of 'e-mobility' – where organisations around the globe encourage people to shift their mode of transport to more sustainable options.

Richmond Council said providing an emission-free solution to transport is one of its priorities.

The number of electric vehicles in the borough is increasing rapidly, leading to more and more resident requests for charging points.

Richmond borough currently has around 200 on-street chargers fitted to lampposts, in partnership with Siemens and leading EV charging provider ubitricity.

On September 9 ubitricity is giving their customers a free charge.

Any car plugged in to a public ubitricity charging station in the borough between a minute past midnight and 11.59pm on the day will receive their charge session at zero cost.

Cllr Alexander Ehmann, chair of the council's Transport and Air Quality Committee, said: "We need to accelerate the electrification of transport by encouraging more people to exchange their polluting vehicles for EVs.

"We have well over 200 charging points available across the borough already, with more installations planned later this year.

"Hopefully this promotion will encourage even more people to go 'electric', they are becoming cheaper to buy and run, more convenient to charge and use, and most importantly they are better for the environment and air quality."
