Matt Button Drum Lessons

I help beginners and young drummers become confident, musical drummers by teaching real grooves, playing along to favourite songs and quickly learning the basics.

I'm a friendly, patient and encouraging teacher based at Ritz Music Studio in Richmond. I teach beginners and developing players of all ages, particularly teenagers who want to start playing in a relaxed and structured way, as well as adults who are picking up the sticks for the first time or returning after a long break.

My aim is to help students feel like drummers from the very beginning. With the right support, you can quickly start playing simple beats along to real songs. That belief comes from my own experience: as a teenager, I played my first gig with a band after just four weeks of learning. I still remember how exciting it felt to be making music with my friends.

Lessons are built around playing real songs and making steady progress. We work on timing, coordination, technique, listening and musicality—but always in a practical way that connects to real playing, rather than dry theory or exercises for their own sake.

My teaching style is calm, positive and clear, with plenty of space to ask questions, make mistakes and build skills step by step. I'm particularly sensitive to students who may need extra patience, reassurance or flexibility, and I want every student to feel comfortable, understood and able to progress in their own way.

Alongside teaching, I've spent many years playing in bands and live music settings, which helps me bring a practical, real-world perspective to every lesson. I'm also a Rockschool Associate Tutor and teach students from Richmond, Kingston and across South West London.
