It is one of the best riverside pubs in Britain and possibly the prettiest - now the White Swan, on the banks of the Thames, is looking for staff.

Now that summer students have returned to university, the much loved pub, which has become a destination in itself, particularly on match days at Twickenham, is recruiting.

Just this week, it was named as one of the ten best riverside pubs in the capital by the FT, which said: "In summer, it is a fine place to come for a game of cards and a few drinks….In the depths of winter, there are few better places for a mulled cider beside a glowing fire."

The small but busy riverside Freehouse, which is famous for the beer garden on the river, serves a great selection of drinks and home cooked food.

A spokesman said: "We are looking for part time bar staff as well as a kitchen porter to work evenings and weekends.

"We have a small friendly team and although we are quieter in the winter months we have rugby days at Twickenham and lots of events going on."

The pub dates back to the 17th century and the building can be seen in the Samuel Scott print, dated 1760, that hangs above the fire in the bar.

In modern times, it has become famous for its annual raft race with large crowds gathering on the bank outside.

The spokesman said: "Inside we have about 12 tables of various shapes and sizes, a couple of window seats and a few stools at the bar.

"It's a very cosy pub in winter, especially when we light the fires. In summer we open the doors to the balcony and put up sunshades in the garden. Sometimes, at high tide, the garden is IN the river but never for long.

"Everyone who works here knows what it's like to wade through the water with a few plates or glasses in hand."

The pub said that experience is preferred but not essential. The starting wage is £8.91 plus tips and there is a bonus scheme for busy days, which can be worth up to £100 per week.

It is asking applicants to pop in with a CV or email Elaine via [email protected]
